Just Jack: Crosstown Rebel Rave
@ Motion
The new beauty of Bristol’s house and techno scene is, seemingly from nowhere, it’s got really, really good.
Bolstered by a committed, enthusiastic and perfect size crowd, it’s hard not to be energised by the kind of person that frequents Bristol's foremost house and techno night - Just Jack. Fashionable, knowledgeable and with an unwavering commitment to the house and techno textures Just Jack puts forward at their parties, this is potentially the most up-for-it crowd in Bristol.
Fast-forward to the end of the party and evidence of this can be found in a swathe of bodies still bubbling away on the dance floor. Herein lies the magic with Just Jack. They utilise The Tunnel, unquestionably the best room in Bristol clubbing maze Motion, to absolutely full effect in order to generate the intimate atmosphere for the majority of their parties here. The sound is crisp, punchy and full and the crowd is right in the DJ’s face, as they should be.
Tonight’s guests represent some of the most forward thinking brains in house music at the moment. Record label Crosstown Rebels are in session tonight and have Jamie Jones, Lee Foss and Deniz Kurtel straddling house, disco and curveballs in a combination that doesn’t just act a party starter, it anchors the music with a mood that is inescapably fun.
Much of the nu-disco sounds that have become the flavour at the moment are played out with homage’s to the past. Tonight’s nods to INXS and Chic do this with ease, but it’s the contemporary house sounds of Foss and Jones that win the day in a couple of the most refreshing DJ performances Crack has heard in some time.
Jones’ collaborations with Foss and current house marvels Wolf and Lamb have breathed a soulful and groove laden edge into house music that was perhaps missing in the bleeps and glitches of the techno based sounds that have dominated in recent years. It’s now OK to move your hips again and tonight is an all-encompassing example of this. Sweaty, bouncy and addictive house hooks bubble along all-night and continue with the residents after Foss and Jones finally hang up their headphones.
These parties continue to showcase the exciting underground underbelly of Bristol’s music scene that isn’t characterised by bass. The excitement continues long into the morning at The Old Fox (a pub round the corner that opens especially early for morning revellers) when Just Jack gives way to the Breakfast Club and the morning gives way to day.
A brilliant party that captures the true spirit of the music it pushes, Just Jack continues to hold a unique place in the spectrum of Bristol nightlife.
