In:Motion: Subloaded

We’d been missing Subloaded. Strangely conspicuous by its absence in 2010, Bristol’s most reliable and intelligent dubstep night was celebrating its 6th birthday for In:Motion…in Motion.

Perhaps the jury was out on whether Bristol’s most original and forward thinking dubstep imprint could still resonate its bass sound in the wake of dubstep infiltrating every major club, airwave and party from here to rural Norfolk. Luckily Subloaded has never been an ordinary bass party.

Subloaded’s trick has always been showcasing the best of the Bristol dubstep scene alongside some choice invited guests. This night was conceived six years ago as way to showcase the superb crop of producers who brought a re-invigoration to Bristol’s slightly repetitive formula of bass music.

Presenting a divere range of dubstep, previous Subloaded nights have seen the home grown talents of Subloaded founder Pinch, as well as the likes Peverelist and Appleblim, share the same bill as the intensely technical Shackleton, and the straight up grime styling’s of The Newham Generals. Diversity is the key here and tonight is another bag of mixed nuts.

The first thing that hits you, literally, when you walk into Motion’s main room is the bass. Subloaded has always prided itself on accentuating dubstep’s primary characteristic, but tonight is the loudest we’ve ever heard. An extra Funktion One rig at the back of the warehouse is doing all kinds of eardrum damage and charges the rave from the off.
After a typically solid set from Peverelist, manning the turntables for the next three hours are original three-piece dubstep pioneers - Digital Mystikz. For the first two hours Mala and Coki play a set that harks back to emergence of the genre in the early part of the 00’s and give the bass rig a thoroughly decent workout. It also gives the young’uns in attendance a little education that dubstep didn’t begin with Magnetic Man. This is despite a few odd tune choices and off mixing from Coki that stops the set reaching dizzy heights.

Loefah, the other third of Digital Mystikz, takes over after Mala and Coki for what is the set of the night. Offering a much more cotemporary take on the genre, he smashes through bass anthems with house, garage and dub flavours. Huge rewinds for Girl Unit and his own tracks make the already hyped crowd genuinely ballistic. The pushing of the sound from Loefah indicates a new direction for the Mystikz staple. A well-constructed and bass bolstered set, the whole room feels like it could fall apart at any point.

Pinch then offers a much harder edged sound than we’ve come to expect from his relatively techy DJ sets and Tectonic imprint. A departure maybe? But another massive workout for the speakers that are then taken to crushing point by Doc Scott and man of the moment Breakage, whose dub/drum and bass crossover sound is causing waves aplenty at the moment.

Subloaded’s first foray into Motion confirms a few things. They have finally sorted out the sound in Motion’s main room, so even with a ramped sound system it’s still retains clarity. Subloaded’s popularity has not waned, despite a prolonged absence. And it seems Pinch can put on a night anywhere and get it right. It continues to be Bristol’s most credible bass night. Let’s hope they do a few more.
