Salem
@ Thekla
A cold night at the Thekla was the perfect setting for music as unsettling and haunted as Salem’s. For an audience who seemed eager to see their new favourite band, the atmosphere appeared to be perfect. At least until the band started.
Salem's music has been called an uncomfortable listen to say the least, so it seems only appropriate the three individuals standing on the stage seemed equally uncomfortable and awkward with each other. Even though this dynamic created a brilliant album for King Night, it made them seem slightly unrehearsed and unprepared for a live performance. Jack Donaghue's vocal delivery lacked the menace and tension it so clearly delivered on record.
That said, it wasn't a bad show. For the most part it sounded fantastic - the venue seemed to be a perfect match for the band. Despite the fact only 40 people turned up to see the performance, a disappointing turnout for a band receiving such voracious plaudits at the moments, the level of enthusiasm was definitely there. The problem is Salem's set up makes it difficult for their live show to ever be more that a good listen. Their reluctance to engage with the audience inhibits them, as does the fact their music doesn't have any sounds or moments that causes the listener to question how they were created. It’s all very straightforward.
The highlight of the show came late with Traxx, which was a great fit with the dry ice and lighting and even prompted the band to look, albeit briefly, at the audience. Soon after the show ended abruptly, after only six or seven tracks. It took a while for the audience to disperse, with most people hanging around waiting for their non-existent encore.
As on record, Salem's live show displays potential, but for the most part it is as lifeless as the imagery they concoct through their lyrics. Their need for the trio to commit to their shows is imperative; otherwise they will find it difficult to win over the cynics who, maybe justifiably, believe their music lacks substance.
