Tangled Hair + Tall Ships
@ The Mothers Ruin
Crack’s third party in association with Havana Club rum rolled into the Mothers Ruin for a Christmas themed evening of festive rock treats.
A change of scene from previous venue, The Mothers Ruin is a proper pub in every sense of the word. Wooden floorboards, rustic design and on three levels, the scent of alcohol and the homely, warm atmosphere make it the perfect place to throw a party.
Buzzing from their jaunt round the UK as part of the Big Scary Monsters Christmas label tour, Tangled Hair and Tall Ships arrived at The Mothers Ruin, to see a large selection of Havana Rum being consumed by all in attendance.
As the night rolled on Tangled Hair, got things off to an energetic, high-octane start. Their tight, stop-start performance saw the drummer especially excel in a series of two and a half minute bomblasts. With their four track EP just released they provided a sterling start to the evening.
Headliner Tall Ships are a band garnering themselves quite a reputation. Having provided support for the likes of 65daysofstatic and Maps and Atlases, this is their first headline tour and they took to the stage with gusto.
From the looping guitar pedals to re-assembling their drum kit in the midst of the audience, Tall Ships straddle the live mania of instrument swapping and DIY ethos, with a series of records that vary in pace, tempo and dynamic. It is a consistently engaging and enjoyable listen, as well as a visually entertaining spectacle. The huge round of applause they received at the end was as much for their effort with the show as it was their brilliant music, which is set to stir hearts and minds in 2011.
Finishing off the evening, Coca La Palm DJ’s reminded the crowds what a brilliant era the 80’s was for insatiable pop music, with a set that took in everything from The Eurythmics to Billy Ocean. A fun, pop-tastic and light-hearted way to round of a night which saw a packed venue get in the good time spirit – right on cue for Christmas. No a single drop of free rum was left in sight by the end of the evening.
