The Computers
@ Mango Tango, Falmouth - 27/05/2011
These four lads from Exeter don’t marry musical styles, but instead indulge in an orgy of rhythm and blues, garage punk and rockabilly.
Hitting the stage clad in white uniform, they start to fiercely smash out song after song without pausing for air. They inject a needed element of tongue-in-cheek to hardcore music making the crowd enjoyably mental, not one that turns into a full-on brawl. Instead they prefer to personally batter the audience with gritty, yet melodic riffs, accompanied by feverishly catchy hollering that could easily turn your larynx into a bag of gravel.
The band’s name could deceive many into thinking they are some 80s electro outfit that wear violet make-up and cry in their music videos. Sorry to disappoint, but there’s not a synth in sight. Instead, the lead singer prefers to shriek menacingly and thrash a guitar while running through the crowd.
It’s hard to be different in a time where any old maniac can grab an instrument and upload it to YouTube, but The Computers truly bring something fresh to the table. It’s reassuring that the self professed ‘rock n’ roll weirdos work hard to create their own blend of varied genres. Their peculiar hardcore punk slant on rhythms that wouldn’t look out of place on a Chuck Berry record, succeed in creating an engrossing live act. The Devonians puncture eardrums through a riot of vicious riffs and mob-like vocals.
I’ve never seen a predominantly metal audience look so shit-scared when the lead singer jumped off stage and began pulling people towards the mic, while screaming about the recently received adulation from Radio 1: “Can you fucking believe it?”
Yeah, I can actually.
