Charlie Simpson
YOUNG PILGRIM, PIAS
4/20
So, Charlie Simpson’s all growed up again. See, he was all growed up before when he left Busted and formed a hairy post-hardcore band. But then it turned out he didn’t like that anymore, so he re-growed up and now he’s got an acoustic guitar strapped up high and a waistcoat. Do you think he likes Mumford and Sons? I think he might.
It’s hard to say any more than that about the music - it’s folk-pop in the Mumford vein, complete with Simpson’s gravelly, slightly classic rock-tinged vocals. Lyrically it’s the expected stream of earnest declarations, with the odd curveball thrown in - see “we’ve sent people into space without really knowing if they’re ever gonna come back down” on Down Down Down. Have we? Who has? Have you? Have you done that? I don’t know anyone who’s done that.
Yeah, so all-in-all, pretty much the most brazen and shameless example of musical bandwagon jumping you’re likely to hear. Y’know, a man’s got to do what’s he’s got to do to stay current, but if the radio was leaning towards a punk revival this summer, do you think he’d get the electric back out? I’m certain he would. Grow a pair, mate.
