Red Bull Revolutions

Red Bull Revolutions

Red Bull’s limitless pockets of dosh once again heralded an incredible event of unseen magnitude in central London, when their ‘Revolutions In Sound’ project took over all 30 pods of the London Eye, filling each one with a well known producer (and in some cases more), a sound-guy, a Red Bull rep, some lucky winners and a waiter. Having never set foot on the London Eye and keen to try and combat our vertigo as much as anything, the logistical nightmare facing the organisers of the event was palpable.

The first task facing Red Bull: getting 30 sound systems onto the pods and having an engineer in each to set them up. So as Crack arrived in front of the London Eye we were greeted by a single file queue of 30 men with 30 pairs of speakers, amps and a mixing desk. As the pods came back round they bustled their way onto the iconic London landmark and revolution one commenced.

Meanwhile, Crack had the pleasure of a shed load of free drinks and the company of some of electronic music’s finest in the green room, where it’s safe to say the anticipation was at an exceedingly high level. With the likes of Goldie and Andrew Weatherall rubbing shoulders with the Hessle Audio boys and dubstep cartoon characters Skream and Benga, numerous strains of the spectrum were siphoned by Red Bull in order to give the event as rounded a feel as possible. So as the chosen music men formed a single file queue to enter their self-contained party pod, the wheel started revolution two as they entered.

As the guest list queue for the pods was moving extremely slowly at this point, there were genuine concerns the already on-board producers might have to take an extra revolution in order to get the punters that had won the right to be on the wheel…on the wheel. A couple of tempers ran high, but eventually every pod bound punter assembled and boarded the Eye and so revolutions three and four commenced.

Crack was lucky enough to be on duurrrtttyy hip-hop wunderkid Lunice’s ride. Former Crack feature star and a light on the rise, his glitchy, hip-hop has been causing waves and the 16 or so boys and girls in Pod 18 of The London Eye were treated to an hour, or two spins’ worth, of his current live show.

In between being served whiskey, beer and Red Bull (not together), it’s was hard not to feel a great sense of privilege looking at the astounding view across the capital with its green neon glow, while at the same time partying your socks off. A particular highlight came when the pod, at a slanted angle, allowed the out-looker to view bodies bouncing up and down in other pods, the one next to us being one Jackmaster wearing a Bearskin hat jumping up and down. Another highlight was Lunice’s brilliant dancing on the table in the pod. The whole experience was a sense bludgeoning assault that combined the beautiful (the insane view), the contemporary (Lunice’s music), and the collective experience (the wheel) in some kind of magical trip.

The party continued on the ground at the Silent Disco and then onto Fabric for the after-party, but Crack’s head was still on the London Eye getting crunk with Lunice and partying hard in the neon wilderness.
