Just Jack
@ Motion, 29/10/11
With a reputation as one of the UK’s most respected purveyors of the finest head-eating electronic sounds, Just Jack and their annual Circus Freak Boutique rolled into Motion once again, featuring more acts from the Visionquest family, this time in the shape of Detroit trailblazer Shaun Reeves and rising Italian stars Tale Of Us.
A quick re-acquaintance with a freshly tweaked In:Motion layout was required upon arrival, with the opening of a second warehouse ensuring a radically different experience from the Bugged Out! party three weekends previous. By this point Tale Of Us were already warming up proceedings nicely, not looking too dissimilar to The Knife, and cast against a purposefully conflicting backdrop of mannequin torsos, heads in pig masks and .... bunting.
With a following that takes pride in dressing up to get down whilst not taking itself too seriously, an array of fantastic costumes was to be expected. Turning up as Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka and raving in a long velvet coat soon proved difficult, though Crack managed to stick around for long enough to hear Tale Of Us play Andre Lodemann’s excellent Where Are You Now before overheating and needing a cool down on the smoking terrace, where we’d managed to convince ourselves that Soul Clap were playing all night. In fact, they had taken over The Tunnel, which was perpetually rammed for the Boston twosome’s wonderful slowed-down house magic. Chaz and Eli are probably the most charismatic characters in dance music today, and their wonderful costumes once again proved they put the party before pretension, while their edit of Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game cemented their place as kings of the 80s re-rub. A real moment part of a monumental six-hour set rife with a sense of nostagia, fun and groove.
Galactic funk specialist Space Dimension Controller drew many into the Trouble Vision hosted cave room with an eclectic mix of classic house. The London night also weighed in with strong sets from Midland and Death on The Balcony, making it extremely difficult to pick and choose what to watch, with such strong offerings spread across each of the three rooms.
SDC’s capturing of our full attention meant that by the time we reached the second warehouse, Shaun Reeves was finishing his set with some deep house monsters, leaving Just Jack founding member and resident Tom Rio to finish off as the sun came up, presenting a sublime set of late night warehouse vibes, including some of his own forthcoming productions and remixes.
An excellent night all in all, with Motion’s usual Main Room turned into some kind of Halloween market complete with circus acts. Just Jack Halloween rightfully claimed its ‘party of the year’ tag, a label which many regular ‘Jackers’, Crack included, wholeheartedly support. This night goes from strength to strength and a consistent hats off goes to those who put in so much effort to make it the most dynamic party in the South-West.
The In:Motion juggernaught continues to roll on with Red Bull and Futureboogie’s showcase on November 26th shaping up to be another massive party. Make sure you get down before it all ends on New Year’s Eve.
