Scuba
DJ KICKS (K7)
16/20
In a particularly saturated world of DJ mixes, few mix purveyors retain credibility. Atop o’ the pile sitting next to Fabric’s metal tins is K7’s DJ-Kicks series. For the 38th edition, Paul Rose, aka Scuba (and occasionally SCB), steps up to the plate. According to the man himself, when asked what genre of music he produces and spins, he often just replies “techno” to avoid a never-ending genre discussion. However, it’d be too easy to call this a techno selection as it incorporates strong elements of the UK bass scene with exclusive tunes from Addison Groove, Boddika and Jon Convex. Esteemed producer, head of the ever-consistent Hotflush Recordings and a superb DJ, this selection again proves how well Scuba blurs the lines between UK bass and heads down Berlin techno. Among many standout moments, the penultimate track on the record and the lead track from his latest Adrenalin EP, is a euphoric number with a majestic swooning vocal and dreamy hands in the air synth breakdown. Incredibly cutting-edge stuff.
