Raekwon announces ‘Only Built 4 Cuban Linx’ documentary

A documentary for Raekwon’s seminal 1995 album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx has been announced.

Along with fellow Wu-Tang rapper Ghostface Killah – who appears on 15 of the album’s 18 tracks – Rae held a “sneak peek #PurpleCarpet screening” at the Sundance festival in Utah, which transpired to be a trailer for the documentary.

The documentary is called The Purple Tape Files (Cuban Linx was nicknamed The Purple Tape, as it was released on a purple cassette) and will mark the album’s 20th anniversary. See Raekwon’s confirmation tweet and watch the video for Criminology below.

During our 2013 interview with Ghostface, he explained how he and Raekwon initially travelled to Barbados in 1994 to try and write the album, but left after feeling unwelcome:

“I’d wanted to go there because I’d seen the brochure and I was like ‘Yo, this shit look nice!’ But it was just weird over there man. I think the British run that shit over there… The maids who worked in the hotel – I mean, they was black – but they was just rattin’ on us for no reason. They said we were making too much noise. And then we had our fatigues on, they said we couldn’t even wear fatigues! Like how come you can’t wear fatigues in Barbados?! They just kept fucking with us, they wanted us out of there … I remember now, it was the Royal Pavilion, those are the ones who kicked us out. But that was the best thing they could have done to us, because we went straight to Miami and that’s where we got it in, then RZA recorded us right after.”
