Footage has emerged of Jay Z appearing on BET’s Rap City programme alongside his then mentor Big Daddy Kane in 1990. Jay Z would have been 20-years-old at the time, and the clip is said to be his debut TV appearance.
In contrast to the laid-back, conversational style he’d later develop, in the early days Jay Z used to rhyme in double-time with a rapid flow, which is demonstrated in the brief freestyle he performs in the episode.
