Nicki Minaj appeared at ‘Shining a Light: A Concert for Progress on Race in America’ on Wednesday to read a poem by late poet Maya Angelou. Still I Rise is famous for its bold, assertive feminity, and includes the immortal line “Does it come as a surprise that I dance like I’ve got diamonds at the meeting of my thighs?” – a message that was met with applause on the night. The event was organised as part of series of gatherings to highlight racial tensions in America.
We can’t think of a more suitable person to read out the poem, especially since Nicki herself had a song named Still I Rise on her 2009 mixtape, Beam Me Up Scotty. Watch the recital above.
