Spice Girls’ Wannabe remake brings girl power to the 21st century

It’s been twenty years since the Spice Girls dropped Wannabe and this new feminist video highlights the issues women still face globally

The Spice Girls first single was released 20 years ago this Friday and today a new clip by Project Everyone and The Global Goals entitled #WhatIReallyReallyWant… has brought the song’s iconic video into the 21st century.

The clip sees women recreating scenes from the original in countries around the world with banners highlighting just some of the many problems women still face in society 20 years on. Messages including “End Violence Against Girls” and “Equal Pay For Equal Work” can be seen throughout the energetic, international video.

Original members of the Spice Girls have commented on the video with Victoria Beckham Tweeting “#WhatIReallyReallyWant is no more girls dying of HIV @TheGlobalGoals X vb” and Mel C commenting that she is “flattered and honored that our crazy song is being used so beautifully.”

The clip encourages the use of the hashtag #WhatIReallyReallyWant for people to share their thoughts on what they’d like to see in the world of women’s rights right now. The results will be shared with U.N leaders at the U.N. Sustainable Development Summit which takes place in September 2016.
