City of Orlando to turn Pulse nightclub into a memorial

Taking inspiration from the onePulse foundation, the city has agreed a deal to buy the site and convert it into a permanent acknowledgment of the tragedy in June

The most deadly mass shooting in the history of the USA took place on June 12 at Pulse Nightclub – a gay venue in Orlando. Several months on people continue to flock to the site to pay their respects and show their solidarity with the attacked LGBT community.

After the shooting the onePulse foundation was set up by the nightclub’s owner to help the victims, their families and anyone else affected. One of their aims was to create a permanent memorial at the site and now the local government have stepped in to make that happen.

The mayor of Orlando Buddy Dyer says it will not happen right away. Speaking to the Orlando Sentinel he said: “There are lots of people that are making a visit to the site part of their trip, part of their experience of Orlando, so I think 12 to 18 months of leaving it as-is would be appropriate.”
