Jakuzi – Bir Dusmanım Var

Signed by City Slang after a tip off from a Turkish culture magazine, Istanbul duo Jakuzi are rapidly outgrowing the Istanbul underground that nurtured them. We get why – channeling Ariel Pink in a bath house or Bowie if he riffed on John Waters, not Stanley Kubrick, Kutay Soyocak (vocals) and Taner Yücel (bass) are poised to revise western preconceptions about Istanbul’s thriving musical scenes.

After featuring them as one of our New Music picks in our last issue, we’ve nailed down a premiere of the latest video, Bir Dusmanım Var. Directed by Taner Yücel, the video makes apparent something far braver than the gimp masks they’re known for – a kind of unchecked, emotion. It’s a little camp, sure, but they mean it too.

“The song is about inner demons and delusions of grandeur, about being unhappy and failing to clarify where this feeling comes from,” explain the band. “We had this idea of doing a video in a typical barbershop in Istanbul and base it around a guy who is getting a shave and at the same time having pipe dreams, it’s about someone who is settling a score with himself and his obsession with being successful.”
