Morrissey is selling questionable ‘Black Is How I Feel On The Inside’ tour shirts

Featuring an image of James Baldwin on the front

Morrissey is selling shirts on their North American tour featuring lyrics from The Smiths’ Unloveable: ‘I wear black on the outside ’cause black is how I feel on the inside’.

While the lyric itself is a classic, the line has been paired with an image of the late civil rights activist and writer James Baldwin.

Of course, the t-shirt can be see as problematic and racially insensitive – especially as it’s in support of a white male artist touting an image of black experience. On the other hand, could it be seen as a tribute to the late Baldwin?

We’ve reached out to the merchandising company for comment and will be updating this with more info.
