Composer Nicholas Britell’s Moonlight score to be released

The European version of Moonlight – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is set to be released on 23 June via Invada Records

The album will feature the original score by Nicholas Britell for the Barry Jenkins-directed film.

According to the press release, Britell said on the film, “Working with Barry on Moonlight was a phenomenal experience… He has an immediate instinct about how music works with picture. We would sit in my studio, watching scenes from the film, and experimenting with different possibilities.”

Britell continued, “This is one of my favourite things to do – exploring musical textures, sounds, and ideas live against picture. When an idea works, you see how it can change perceptions of a scene. You really feel it.”

For Britell, there were two phases to the creative process. The composer began by writing the score inspired by early cuts of the film and conversations with Jenkins. Later, he experimented by ‘chopping and screwing’ his recordings by “bend[ing] tracks, taking cellos and turning them into strange bass-like instruments, taking pianos and violins and altering them into a totally new shape.”
