Pantone memorialise Prince with a new shade of purple

Love Symbol #2 is inspired by his custom-made Yamaha purple piano

Pantone and Prince’s estate have announced a new shade of purple is to be named in honour of the late icon’s signature colour. The hue, which is called Love Symbol #2, is based on the colour of his Yamaha piano, a custom-made instrument that was due to be used on tour by the artist before his death by accidental drug overdose in April 2016.

“We are honoured to have worked on the development of Love Symbol #2, a distinctive new purple shade created in memory of Prince, ‘the purple one,'” said Laurie Pressman, the vice-president of Pantone, an institute at the forefront of colour developments and trends. “A musical icon known for his artistic brilliance, Love Symbol #2 is emblematic of Prince’s distinctive style. Long associated with the purple family, Love Symbol #2 enables Prince’s unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself.”

Prince’s association with the colour stretches back to his 1984 film and album Purple Rain and can be traced through his costumes and instruments ever since, earning the icon the sobriquet the Purple One. In the future, Love Symbol #2 will be the official colour used by Prince’s estate for the Prince brand.

The announcement follows the recent news that a new book,  Prince: A Private View, is to be released this October. It will have a forward written by Beyoncé.
