Holger Czukay, founding member of Can, dies age 79

Czukay’s death was confirmed just after midnight on 6 September by his record label, Mute Records. The cause of death is unknown

Holger Czukay has died age 79. It is reported he was found in the original studio of the band Can in Weilerswist, in the region near Cologne, where Czukay had been living. Czukay was a founding member of Can, the seminal experimental krautrock band formed in 1968 and initially active until 1979. He played bass as well as handled recording and engineering, and it was for these latter roles that he truly made his name. By the time of his final album, Saw Delight, with the band, Czukay was solely focused on sound effects and tape recording.

After leaving Can, Holger Czukay continued to have an impact on music through his use of shortwave radio signals and pioneering development of sampling. Over the years he worked with Brian Eno, UNKLE, Eurythmics, Jah Wobble and several more. He remained a prolific musician in later years, releasing the album Eleven Years Innerspace in 2015.
