The first issue, ROOTS. SHOCK. BEAUTY. is released today
FKA twigs has announced a new venture, a ‘digizine’ that can be distributed using Instagram’s slides feature. Titled AVANTgarden, the digizine has been described as “part magic” and “part memoir”. It’s set to be a ten ‘page’ Instagram series exploring the self, and it’ll feature a number of collaborations with her friends and those she’s previously worked with.
The first instalment is a visual exploration of braided hairstyles and is available to view now. Collaborators she’s worked with for the inaugural issue include editor Suzannah Pettigrew, stylist Matthew Joseph and hair stylist Rio Shreedharan amongst others. On the project, twigs said via a press statement, “AVANTGarden is a way for me to express myself without any rules or guidelines, with imagination and care.”
Yesterday (12 October), she took to Twitter to ask her fans a series of questions regarding the significance of their braids. She’s described the digizine as “something fun” which “became a self explorative artistic expression” that caused her to “think about and question my relationship with my exterior shell”.
