Rock legend Tom Petty dies aged 66

Legendary US rock artist and leader of The Heartbreakers, Tom Petty has died.

CBS confirmed the news earlier this evening (2 October) that the musician suffered a full cardiac arrest and was found unconscious and not breathing in his Malibu home Sunday night. According to CBS, he was taken off life support soon after arrival at the UCLA Santa Monica hospital.

Petty’s group, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers rose to fame in the 1970s and Petty enjoyed a successful solo career in his own right. The band’s biggest hits included I Won’t Back Down and American Girl.

Through solo work and releases with the band, Petty sold more than 80 million records worldwide.
