Youth Lagoon
YEAR OF HIBERNATION (Fat Possum Records)
15/20
Rather fittingly, Crack first experienced Year of Hibernation watching a video of an otter running around in the snow, and we’d recommend you do the same (aided by the link below). This debut album from Idaho-based Trevor Powers is a genreless, boundaryless exercise in building an atmosphere. Adorable melodies float through an opaque fog of reverb, gentle piano tinkles and bells drifting along idyllically, while tracks such as July increase in stature as they progress, while retaining a sense of introspection.
Songs often threaten to grow to expansive, epic crescendos, and in their own fragile, personal way they do, observing the wider world from their own insular, minimal space; looking out at the mountains through a window rather than braving the cold; watching the otter running around in the snow from afar rather than trying to grab it. It’s an absorbing meeting of the intensely personal and the grandiose.
Serious snow otter vibes.
