Machine Woman

Much has been made of the contrast between Machine Woman’s deadly-serious moniker and her sometimes irreverent take on dance music: last year’s Genau House EP included I Can Mend Your Broken Heart, a track reportedly inspired by a train-wreck of a tinder date, and her RA page lists ‘DJ Away Game’ and ‘DJ Half Price Lager’ as alternative aliases.

Such antics express certain side-eye in the direction of dance music’s dogmatic seriousness, the Russian-born producer isn’t merely sniping from the sidelines – with a busy gigging schedule and regular shows on BCR and Bristol’s Noods Radio, she’s well-placed to satirise its conventions.

Machine Woman – real name Anastasia Vtorova – describes her production as a habitual process, and while her official output is confined to a couple of cassette releases and a duo of fantastically nuanced EPs for Where To Now? and Peder Mannerfelt’s eponymous label it’s evident that she’s in possession of a growing arsenal of unreleased gold.

Machine Woman’s Crack Mix – entitled 100% Loop Packs, 100% Presets, 100 BMP – goes some way to scratching the surface – an intriguing glimpse into the process of one of the most exciting and elusive producers out there.
