6 New Videos You Need To See
Each week we round-up the best new music videos out there
With the advent of high-speed internet, we’re living in a bit of a golden age for the music video – but we’re also reaching a point where you see at least one of the bloody things every time you open your eyes.
The question is, how do you know which videos are stone cold classics and which are just dust in the wind of the World Wide Web?
As usual, we’re here to help! We’ve rounded up the best clips from the last seven days from the far-flung recesses of the internet.
Check them out after the drop.
Popcaan – Dem Wah Fi Know
Director: Focus CreepsPopcaan once said “real thugs never forget the dumpland” and his video for Dem Wah Fi Know explores the mythology of duppy spirits from his homeland of Jamaica.
The video’s director Focus Creeps said “The duppy mythology seemed like a perfect metaphor for the kind of confidence it takes for a Jamaican artist to rise up against the adversity, haters, and corruption that will always be an obstacle for those who put their faith and energy into something positive.”
We couldn’t agree more.
White Reaper – Make Me Wanna Die
Director: Matt FulksThere’s something about this video that reminds of Avril Lavigne’s clip for Complicated. But let’s face it, that video is an utter classic.
White Reaper’s clip for Make Me Wanna Die sees a giant-skelton headed figure causing all kinds of chaos in a suburban mall and shopping precinct before everything turns into a seriously psychedelic, Adventure Time-worthy trip.
Well aaaaaalrriiiiiight.
Missy Elliot – WTF (Where They From)
Director: Dave MeyersHighlights include a mirror-bedecked Missy cutting enviably amazing shapes on a sidewalk, about four dance breaks that shit all over Bieber’s Sorry video, an upside-down dude on a swegway, and Missy taking on a pop art persona to spit bars that are just as good as we remember them.
Oh, and there’s a puppet Pharrell in the mix too.
James Ferraro - Thrash and Escalate
Directors: James Ferraro and Elsa HendersonJames Ferraro is an anomaly: an artist who has survived pigeonholing. Specifically, Ferraro has been bracketed as a ‘vaporwave’ artist for his futuristic visuals and highly stylised aesthetic. His latest video, however, is just wicked.
This is a grimy urban track overlaid with visuals depicting industrial sprawl, jammed highways and silhouettes of smog spewing smoke stacks.
A masterclass in music and video synchronicity.
Young Thug – Thief In The Night ft. Trouble
Director: Be El BeeYoung Thug has no trouble working with Be El Bee time and time again and we’ve got no problem with it either. Their latest collaboration Thief In The Night is a definite addition to the canon that sees Thugga and his friend Trouble partying in what looks like a set piece from Hobo With A Shotgun whilst a couple of unsuspecting guys get robbed by the very same girls they picked up to take to a house party.
Classic Thug and Be El Bee action.
