Canada’s Metz have always impressed us with their heavier-than-heavy sonic assault

The three-piece fire off absolute magic on stage as they thrash through tuneful punk bangers and whip their audiences into a frenzy of limbs and sweat.

When they’re not busy slaying stages though, they like nothing better than kicking back and watching the master of horror – that’s John Carpenter to you – at work. We asked the band’s bassist Chris Slorach to talk us through the top 5 John Carpenter movies he’s seen in the last month.

You can catch Metz alongside Lightning Bolt, John Talabot and a host of others at the first ever Mutations Festival in Brighton this weekend but in the mean time you check out Chris’s selections below.

Halloween

Obvious choice for obvious reasons. The soundtrack is perfect and the mood of the entire movie is unsettling.

I think Michael Myers was the most disturbing villain, no motive, just a man who turned evil.

Big Trouble in Little China

I didn’t even know it until recently but I guess I’m a fan of Kurt Russell? Pretty amazing action star. When Kim Cattrall says “you should try sitting down wind from me. it’s Miller time” I believe her. Takes a special guy to be able to muster the smell of old beer like that.

They Live

I think the idea of this movie is great but the pace is bizarre. “A drifter finds a pair of sunglasses that allow him to see the aliens that have taken over the earth” what a concept. Once again, John Carpenter nailed the soundtrack here.

In the Mouth of Madness

They filmed this about 15 minutes from my home in Toronto. Whenever I’m north of the city I can see the black church with gold onions on top. This is one of my favourite Lovecraft inspired horror films.

Prince of Darkness

I didn’t always love this movie but I think the soundtrack is pretty amazing.

Catch Metz at the first ever Mutations Festival in Brighton on 28 + 29 November
