The New Jersey rapper picks out some of Busta’s finest moments.

As an emcee, Cakes Da Killa projects his wild charisma with a hard-hitting flow, and so it’s somewhat fitting that he’s chosen to highlight some of Busta Rhymes’ greatest early tracks for this week’s Selections feature.

“Busta Rhymes is one of my favourite MCs of all time,” Cakes told us. “Top five, hands down. His unique brew of animated antics, wordy delivery, spine-numbing visuals and lethal lyrics has solidified his position in hip-hop history. If you’re not so familiar with his catalogue, please take the time listen to this run down of some of my favourite Busta album cuts, which sheds light on some gems that weren’t necessarily singles and showcases the sadistic wordsmith as his best.”

Cakes Da Killa kicks off a string of European dates in Manchester tomorrow night (17 July), so make sure you check them out below.

Everything Remains Raw

1996

This is from his debut album The Coming and it’s the perfect example of Busta’s punchy flow. His bars hit the beat like a fucking street fighter. The vocals are just unique. You just know that’s Busta’s crazy ass spitting because no one’s delivery is like that.

The metaphors are out of this world and the vibe is classic New York hip-hop.

So Hardcore

1997

So Hardcore is offbeat, witty and showcases everything I love about Busta’s flow. To start a track with, “Yo, I walk through bricks walls, fuck around and hijack your whole shopping mall,” I mean, it’s pure playful stuff, but so sophisticated and suave.

Rhymes Galore

1997

This is just slaughter on thee most minimalistic beat!

Everybody Rise

1998

From Extinction Level Event (Final World Front), this is the perfect example of a track that gives you MC envy, like, ‘damn I wish that was my track.’ There’s so much energy and that instrumental is just beautiful. Pure stadium music.

Woo Ha!! Got Yo All In Check (remix)

1998

Last but certainly not least: one of my favorite link ups in hip-hop history was when Ol’ Dirty Bastard jumped on the Woo Ha remix. The video is a visual masterpiece and it captures the vibes I miss in hip-hop. Extreme creativity, individuality and total freedom from two legends.
