Asusu is best known as one third of Livity Sound, where he contributes the subtler side to a chiseled, percussion-led style. Although the steady rise of the Bristol-born production collective and label has made him a household name among fans of rough hewn UK club sounds, it’s only more recently, as the pace of their collaborative live sets has slowed, that Asusu has really grown into his own. This year he launched his label Impasse as a platform for exploration. Inaugurating it with the Serra EP, the Bristol-based producer highlighted his versatility while propelling his sound even further into the dark corners of electronic music with crystalline ambient excursions and hypnotic shattered grooves. While his next Impasse release is due next month, Asusu’s Crack mix burrows similar steely ground. Introducing some new and unreleased material, including some wonderfully tense sounds from fellow Bristol producers Rhythmic Theory, Pev and Batu, it pierces glacial ambience with broken, muscular percussion and soaring, guttural techno. It’s extremely dynamic stuff, mining the producer’s signature chilly intensity.
