N1L

N1L is the alias of Latvian producer Martins Rokis.

Having made minted Lee Gamble’s experimental UIQ label with his EP Wrong Headspace back in 2015, Rokis has marked himself out one of the most singular and exciting producers out.

The release served as a statement of intent for the imprint, with Rokis drawing on his background in conceptual art for a delightfully warped set of tracks operating at the intersection of soundscape design and exploded, post-everything club music.

Since then, N1L has followed up with the excellent Ikea Zen EP, again on UIQ and more recently Mud Diver for Brighton label Where to Now? (the latter was accompanied by a suitably surreal video produced by Rokis himself, worth checking out here.)

The forty five-minute mix composed by N1L for Crack defies description- by turns it’s sparse and claustrophobic, laden with juddering basslines and smudged snatches of vocal. Rokis describes it as “mostly dance floor unfriendly… [it] vaguely paints the sonic landscape i am currently interested in – sci-fi darkness, otherworldly bass mutations and escapist atmospheres.”

We couldn’t have put it better ourselves. Lock in.
