Following the incredible success of Dr Dre’s Beats headphones (Forbes Magazine rated him #1 in their 2012 ‘hip-hop rich list’, estimating that he earned £70 million in 12 months), you might think he’d see the music game as an interruption of serious business.

However , in an LA Weekly interview focused on the new degree program Dr. Dre has set up with Interscope boss Jimmy Lovine at the University of Southern California (its full title: the Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation), Dre dismissed the idea that his new ventures will distract him from his music career. “No, I’m more inspired to go back into the studio now. Beats is rolling, this thing is happening, and it’s incredible. Now I’m ready to go back to my first love”, he said. “I’m going back in and hopefully the next Kendrick Lamar or the next Eminem walks in the door and I can work with that artist. I’m going to record forever”.

He also shed a little light on a more specific, and incredibly exciting project – an N.W.A. biopic directed by F. Gary Gray (the man behind Friday, the videos for Ice Cube’s It Was A Good Day, Dre’s Keep Their Heads Ringin’ and their collaborative single Natural Born Killaz):

“We just go the green light from Universal. I was just with Cube and F. Gary Gray yesterday writing the script, so it looks like it’s really happening. Gary is directing the movie. It’s going to be a true story. It’s going to be based on all the true events that happened”

Watch the video for It Was A Good Day below.

Alongside releasing a series of singles with his new project Fuzz and recently reissuing a pair of his rare LPs back in January, Ty Segall has recorded a new solo album entitled SLEEPER, which will be released via the reputable indie imprint Drag City on 19th August.

Last year, Segall dropped a solo album Twins, an album under the Ty Segall Band name and a collaborative record with White Fence, all of which were excellent. Watch a trailer video for SLEEPER below.

On the 8th June, Bristol promoters Just Jack are throwing a party at Bristol’s Motion club in which Manchester legend A Guy Called Gerald will headline. As a pioneer of the Roland TB-303 synth, Gerald’s significant contribution to the acid house phenomena can’t be emphasised enough. Since relocating to Berlin in recent years, A Guy Called Gerald’s career has remained fruitful with releases on !K7, a perfected raw live show and an uncompromising attitude. We’ve embedded his timeless classic Voodoo Ray below. Also among the line-up is former Freak N Chic boss Dan Ghenacia (who’s cooked up the new fabric mix with his French super group Apollonia), Delano Smith, Summits and more. The Shapes team will be spinning sets in a boutique area with Shambarber resident Billy Disney. Tickets can be bought here.

In other Just Jack related news, they’ve recently launched a music agency. In celebration of the new venture, they’re throwing an outdoor party in the basketball court at Bristol’s Riverside Youth Centre on the 15th June. Mano Le Tough, Typesun, James Welsh, Seka and others are booked to play the event. More info can be found here.

Kendrick Lamar has released a video for Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe, one of the many highlights from his seminal 2012 album good kid, m.A.A.d city. The video sees Lamar attend a funeral service, rap in a field, get baptised in liquor and pop champagne bottles with some ‘grieving’ guests. Juicy J, Lamar’s Black Hippy bandmate Schoolboy Q and comedian Mike Epps also attend the service to pay their respect. The scenario ends with a message which reads ‘Death To Molly’. In response to the clip, Lamar’s affiliate Danny Brown tweeted, ‘I hope this new KDot video do make people stop fucking wit #Molly’. As one of hip-hop’s most enthusiastic ecstasy advocates, you’d be forgiven for speculating that there’s a hint of sarcasm in Brown’s comment.

We’ve embedded an extended version of the video below, which includes a snippet of a new Schoolboy Q track that samples Cherry, a recent track from Portland’s slick electro-pop outfit Chromatics.

And if you’d like to pause Random Access Memories for a couple more minutes, you can check out Kendrick hop on a new version of Solange’s True EP track Looks Good With Trouble over at Nah Right. Solange is releasing the song as a single on iTunes.

We don’t know if you’ve heard, but Daft Punk are releasing a new album called Random Access Memories on the 17th this month. The album will be played tonight (13th May) at a listening party which is taking place in The Shard, London’s epic new skyscraper which is known to be the tallest building in the European Union (via The Line of Best Fit).

The listening party is a ‘special invite only’ event. However, there’s been rumours flying round today that the record will be made available to stream via iTunes at midnight. A dramatic teaser video for the record can be watched below. Tune into Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 Show at 19:00 tonight to hear an ‘in depth’ interview with Daft Punk, and most probably some of the new tracks.

Brighton based scuzz-rock outfit The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster have reportedly split up… less than a year after they’d reformed. The band initially broke up in 2011, but announced a comeback in May 2012, possibly inspired by a boost they received after their song Chicken was used in a Nike Football ad around that time.

The band were scheduled to play The Great Escape festival and a date at the 02 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in October. The news of the band’s split came via a post on The Great Escape’s Facebook page, which reads:

“Today TGE HQ received the sad news that The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster has disbanded just days before they were due to bring the house down this Saturday at Coalition. According to a statement from the band, a shared musical common ground couldn’t be found and they apologise for any disappointment caused by cancelling upcoming shows.”

The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster released three studio albums over the course of their career, with the their first being 2002’s Hörse of the Dög and their last being Blood and Fire, which was released in 2010. Watch the video for the band’s single Celebrate Your Mother below.

While there’s been a lack of reassuring information about the supposedly forthcoming 20th anniversary Wu-Tang Clan album, many of the collective’s members have been keeping active with their solo projects this year. Masta Killa and Inspectah Deck have both dropped solo records to little fanfare (although the latter is certainly worth checking out) and Ghostface Killah recently released his ambitious concept album Twelve Reasons To Die. Now Ghost’s rhyming partner Raekwon has shared two new tracks over the weekend, including a soulful new tune called Son of Sam, and All About You which features Estelle (the British singer appeared on Rae’s much grittier track Chop Chop Ninja). The tracks are set to appear on Raekwon’s forthcoming album F.I.L.A. Stream both below.

The messages were delivered by The Vampyre of Time and Memory, the character who’s on the cover of QOTSA’s forthcoming album …Like Clockwork, which drops on June 3rd via Matador. With Josh Homme gradually revealing collaborators such as Elton John, the Scissor Sister’s Jake Shears, Dave Grohl, Alex Turner, Trent Reznor and Nick Oliveri, the hype about the record has been boiling up for quite some time.

Now a 3 minute clip of album track I Appear Missing has been shared. The accompanying video features sinister, blood splattered animations courtesy of Liam Brazier and Boneface (who created …Like Clockwork’s cover art).

We’re extremely excited to announce that Crack has teamed up with No Need To Shout and Colours to curate Simple Things 2013, a unique one day music event that’s taking place across multiple venues in the heart of Bristol on October 12th. With over 60 acts and 10 stages, we’ll be hosting a truly eclectic line-up which reflects the diverse content of our magazine and brand. Our first wave of festival partnerships includes Crazylegs, Alfresco Disco, Shapes and Howling Owl.

The first of our headliners to be revealed is Moderat, whose debut album is widely regarded as one of the most groundbreaking electronic records in recent years. The trio, compromised of current Crack cover stars Modeselektor and Apparat, followed the record with a tour that included headlines slots at Melt!, Bloc and Sonar. Their legendary live show earned them the no.1 spot on Resident Advisor’s ‘Best Live Acts of 2009’ list. Their hugely anticipated sophomore album is set for a release this August.

The line-up of last year’s Simple Things event included Grimes, Squarepusher, Factory Floor, Hudson Mohawke, Lunice, Rustie, Ghostpoet, Wet Nuns, Vondelpark and many, many more. We’ll be announcing more artists as well as more details about the venues, stages and partnerships of Simple Things 2013 in the coming weeks.

Snoop Dogg has unveiled a new photo sharing app named Snoopify, which allows users to customise pictures with ‘digital stickers’ that are befitting of the self-parodying West Coast legend’s legacy. “Decorate your photos with never-before-seen graphics of Snoop, ranging from classic Snoop Dogg to Rasta-inspired Snoop Lion looks and phrases”, says the app’s official website. The app operates on iOS and Android and was developed with 99centbrains, who previously worked on Major Lazer’s Lazergram app which allowed iPhone users to remix their album Guns Don’t Kill People, Lazers Do.

Always the entrepreneur, Snoop is also the subject of a forthcoming beat ‘em up computer game called Way of The Dogg (via Fact).

Dev Hynes has revealed that Adam Bainbridge (ie Kindness) and Clams Casino will feature on his forthcoming new album as Blood Orange. In an interview with MTV Hive, Hynes expressed a desire to get the currently untitled record – which will follow up 2011’s Coastal Grooves – out before the summer is over. As well as directing Solange Knowles’ live band on tour, Hynes has kept himself busy by recording with Jessie Ware and Mutya Keisha Siobhan/MKS, the group consisting of the three original Sugababes members. MKS’s Lay Down In Swimming Pools, a Hynes recorded re-work of Kendrick Lamar’s Swimming Pools (Drank), can be heard here.
