051 – Ital

Since first shifting away from his background in noise punk, and in the process kickstarting Amanda Brown’s now widely respected 100% Silk imprint, Brooklyn’s Daniel Martin-McCormick has established a name as one of the most intriguing beatmakers around. An art-damaged, noise-indebted approach nurtured through years playing in bands such as Mi Ami and Black Eyes quickly caught the ears of British beat institution Planet Mu, and his two album releases on that label in 2012 – Hive Mind and Dream On – signalled his arrival as a truly significant talent. In anticipation of two appearances at Bristol’s Simple Things Festival on October 12th – once on the Red Bull Music Academy Presents: The Firestation stage alongside Evian Christ, Mykki Blanco and Marcel Dettmann, and another representing Planet Mu with DJ Rashad in the immersive surroundings of the abandoned police cells – Ital has moved away from his usual live approach to assemble a compelling DJ mix. While it bursts into life with an uncharacteristic hands-in-the-air vocal sample, this Crackcast soon settles into a more typically Ital niche; dark yet playful techno which ebbs and swells while remaining ever powerful, percussive and with a stylistic flourish.

Head here to pick up tickets for Simple Things, which takes place at Colston Hall and The Island, Bristol, on October 12th. Ital appears alongside Nicolas Jaar, Modeselektor, Pantha Du Prince, These New Puritans, No Age and a host of other acts.
