BENIN CITY

You have to hand it to Audio Doughnuts; they know how to keep it interesting. Having spent 2011 hosting the sort of bass bin-busting parties that Tory Ministers lobby to get shut down, the incorrigibly on-point club collective have drawn a wildcard for the release of their debut cut as a label. Given their Mixmag-approved reputation for being a stable of party-people, some may be surprised by a distinct lack of airhorns and thwacking 808’s here, but Baby, from LV collaborator Joshua Idehen’s Benin City project, instead plumbs darker, more fascinating depths. It’s fairly stark and paranoid stuff from the silver-tongued wordsmith who brought LV’s Routes to life last year, but Benin City’s anxious clash of swelling brass, mournful laments and inky electronics make Baby a captivating debut from a beguiling new act and a burgeoning young label.
