#C2C14 x Field Day

Village Underground | 18 September

The theme for the 14th Alfa Romeo Mito Club to Club is the Trojan Horse, which “represents the viral process in which music and cultural trends emerge from the underground to reach mainstream, challenging it from within”. This preview event at the Village Underground acted as a taster to the International Festival of Music & Arts on the 5-9 November in Torino, Italy, the festival dedicated to boundary pushing realms of electronic music with an international line-up to make your mouth water.

The Village Underground proudly presented the brooding bunch of Vaghe Stelle, Laurel Halo, Fatima Al Qadiri and Ninos du Brazil. Vaghe Stelle opened the night with a charming and moody set accompanied by trippy visuals, resembling a Sim folding in on itself in time with Stelle’s heavy beats. Next, a set of pure witchcraft, Laurel Halo guided her audience through a pulsating and prolonged climax of merged layers, thudding bass and disfigured melodies. The Hyperdub artist kept her audience spell bound and waiting with baited breath for what was next to come, dragging the audience through an unpredictable set, guiding the entranced crowd into an abyss of delectable darkness.

The penultimate set of visual artist and composer, Fatima Al Qadiri – who also goes under the alias of Ayshay – was outright mind blowing. Her refusal to be confined to one style or genre created a hybrid mix of transglobal elements. The crowd welcomed the seamless intertwining of RnB and hip-hop alongside her own music from Asiatisch. Al Qadiri remained cool and collected as she demonstrated that she is undoubtedly the master of her trade.

Ending with a bang, Ninos du Brazil’s own presentation and style was an energy best prepared for. Sporting silver tinsel helmets and painted with ghost white faces, the electro-punk/batucada duo each with their own drum kit screamed and danced through what came to be a tiresome act. Nonetheless, a mosh pit did ensue.

And so #C2C14 looks set to be the real deal: alive with passion, honesty and acts with an abundance of talent and creativity.
