PSYCHEMAGIK

LUNAR ESCAPE EP

(Self-Released)

16/20

Best known for a slew of club edits (notably Fleetwood Mac and Talking Heads) and remixes (Azari & III and Metronomy), the intergalactic house duo touch down with a release of entirely original material. No samples in sight. The Lunar Escape EP comes as a digital release ahead of Psychemagik’s first full-length due later this year.

Up to now the UK duo have remained a bit of a DJs secret, with their edits appearing in mixes from disco veterans like Tom Middleton and Greg Wilson. Their record bags have also become somewhat coveted, with everyone from Q-Tip to Fake Blood coming to them for rare vinyl.

Still, not much is known about Psychemagik’s potential as artists in their own right. This first release goes some way to proving their worth. The opening track “Where are we?” is a trademark synth-heavy disco offering which will no doubt get a great deal of floor time in the coming months. Surprisingly, however, the standout for Crack was the final track, a far more laid back house groove “Above the clouds” with a glossy string arrangement riding over the top. It remains tricky to get a full grasp on these guys but we certainly look forward to hearing the full length to follow.
