Mexico City’s cult bakery Panadería Rosetta and Handshake Speakeasy join forces for a three-day takeover of Toklas Bakery in honour of Día de Muertos.
This Halloween weekend, London gets a dose of Mexico City energy as Don Julio Tequila transforms Toklas Bakery into Panadería Don Julio.
Running from 31 October to 2 November, the three-day event folds together Mexico’s culinary and club scenes. By day, guests can sample pan de muerto – the sweet, symbolic bread baked by chef Elena Reygadas of Panadería Rosetta – alongside Don Julio cocktail workshops and a Milagros-curated bodega filled with handmade Mexican crafts.
At night, the bakery will transform into an 80-person speakeasy, led by Mexico City’s Handshake Speakeasy. With Don Julio cocktails available all night, the menu will include a new Paloma designed by model and musician Gabbriette, who will host the Thursday night launch.
The weekend’s music program spans reggaetón, techno, and experimental club sounds, with sets from Mexico City’s N.A.A.F.I collective, CC:DISCO!, and London’s queer-Latinx crew 2CPERREA.
On Sunday, the official Day of the Dead, guests can take part in nail art, face painting, and other rituals set against traditional papel picado décor and a marigold-filled ofrenda centerpiece, rounding out a weekend of reflection and revelry.
Kandace Williamson, Don Julio’s Senior Culture Lead, said the project aims to bring “the spirit of modern Mexico – bold, creative, and deeply connected to its roots – to new audiences.”
