Hot Chip have always been discerning crate diggers. You can hear the wide breadth of their record collections via their own productions and DJ sets, and this certainly makes a Late Night Tales mix – the 40th in the series – an intriguing proposition.

Often, the challenge with these collections is to create a cohesive release, marked by a singular mood. But with members of the band each having “varying interpretations of the brief” there are songs here that work for the afters; for late night headphones walks and for those hypnagogic moments at sunrise.

Thankfully, there’s a nocturnal, spaced out quality to it all that pulls it together, as woozy, downbeat tracks rub shoulders with four Philippe Zdar co-produced new songs, including a graceful cover of the Velvet Underground’s Candy Says – a song that band members Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard covered when they were still at school.

Elsewhere, Nothing’s Changed sees the band attempt a Jamaican dub track which flows perfectly into heavy dub classic King in My Empire, while Worlds Within Worlds bears some resemblance to John Grant.

Fever Ray, Nils Frahm and Planningtorock also feature but it’s the more obscure tracks – Pale Blue’s Have You Passed Through This Night’s icy disco and Charlotte Adigéry’s glassy, ricocheting 1,618 – that are the most compelling. It ends with the band’s soft-lit None of These Things and Alexis’ dad reading from James Joyce’s novel Finnegans Wake. Late Night Tales answers the brief and rises to the challenge; and it’s as off-beat and charming as you’d expect.
