6 New Videos You Need To See

Bey slays, Flat Eric returns, and Pussy Riot fondue themselves in this week’s roundup

The reaction to Beyoncé’s new material on Saturday night was a phenomenon – but that’s not the only much chatted about video that popped from the pits of pop culture this week.

See our shouts on the best bits below.

Beyoncé - Formation

Essential viewing this week comes in the form of Queen B’s visuals for Formation. The political signifiers are everywhere: she sinks into New Orleans floodwaters on the back of a police cruiser; ‘Stop Shooting Us’ is sprayed onto a fence in a lingering shot; a little black boy dances in front of a line of white policemen, who raise their hands in surrender when he does. This is the backdrop to Beyonce claiming a radical new identity, and the internet is here for it. Read a fantastic roundtable about the video over on the New York Times.

Pussy Riot - Chaika

Directed by Nadya Tolokonnikova and Andrey Fenochka

On the other end of the scale, Pussy Riot have attempted a similarly political stance in their new video, but seem to have smothered themselves in cliché-ridden Cheddar on their way onto set. However, the song is about Russia’s prosecutor general, Yuri Chaika and the recently uncovered connections he has with gang warfare in Russia. A watch of this may leave you cold, uncomfortable, and unmistakably peckish, but you can’t fault the intention.

Young Thug - F Cancer ft. Quavo

Directed by Be El Be and co-directed by Young Thug

Lil Boosie has recently fought off kidney cancer, and Young Thug has made him a song and video in celebration. Thugger’s pink scrubs, a peek into his extensive sneaker collection and the party at the end where you’d definitely find a Party Ring or three make this exceptional viewing. Fuck cancer!

Parquet Courts - Dust

Directed by Johann Rashid

Parquet Courts are back with a kind of kraut-rocky take on stoner rock. It’s compulsive listening, and the video is fittingly dusty. Some kind of enormous dust mite haunts the office of a bored, noodle-eating worker, leaving him rattled and contemplating his shallow existence. Or, what he’s going to have for tea.

Tyler, The Creator - Perfect ft. Kali Uchis & Austin Feinstein

Directed by Wolf Haley

Kali Uchis flexes her excellent pipes in this chill, nostalgia-inducing cut from Tyler’s most recent Cherry Bomb. A colour-screen is split in half, one containing Uchis, the other Tyler and Austin Feinstein of Slow Hollows, and butterflies roam throughout, coating Tyler’s shirtless body. Weirdly relaxing.

Mr Oizo - Hand In The Fire ft. Charli XCX

Directed by Meat Dept

Mr Oizo and Charli XCX race muscle cars in the video for this addictively poppy tune – but of course, they’re portrayed as a couple of cute Flat Erics. If you need to remind yourself of who Flat Eric is, here’s the video for Mr Oizo’s nostalgic house banger Flat Beat to remind you.
