California’s !!! (Chk Chk Chk) are one of the most revered dance-punk outfits on the planet

This year the trio released their latest album As If and it marks nearly 20 years in the game for the Sacramento band. We asked the band to sling us over a top 5 and the band’s guitarist Mario Andreoni kindly obliged with this list of songs that he just has to listen to on repeat.

“Every once in a while a song hits me in such a way that I just want to hear it on repeat over and over again.” he told us. “Here are five of my favourites.”

Take it away Mario.

Funkadelic - Sexy Ways

Listened to this on repeat while studying for a History final in 11th grade. I got an A. I’ve always thought this was what Bowie was going for on Golden Years.

Dungeon Family - Follow the Light

Once I drove from Washington DC to Philadelphia by myself at night and listened to this song the entire way on repeat. I felt as if I were following the light myself. At one point, I stopped to pay a toll and asked how the toll booth guy was doing. He answered, “I live a life of unimaginable horror.” Someone should hire Organized Noize to produce something. They are the best.

Carole King - I Feel The Earth Move

We were in Korea on tour and I had never been there before. I had never really listened to Tapestry, and got super into it. I listened to this song on repeat while I watched a channel that showed only games of the chess-like strategy game Go on TV. I was trying to learn the rules by watching with this song in my headphones in the background. I watched for hours while listening to the song. It didn’t work.

Cat Power- Manhattan

This record came out three months after my daughter was born. She was born in Manhattan. Having a newborn is a bit like existing in one long strange dream day. It’s a beautiful and bizarre time. I played this song on repeat for many hours of that strange long day. Her voice is both evocative and calming, perfect for being a new parent.

U.S. Girls - Window Shades

Nic suggested I check this record out and I loved it but couldn’t get past this song which is the third track. I find the “How could I leave it all up to you?” refrain really haunting. I listened to it for about 4 hours straight two weeks ago. It feels like she’s singing right to you. I really want to see her play live.

!!!’s latest album As If is out now via Warp Records.
