Detroit’s Protomartyr are fuelled by a grim sense of humour.

The four-piece formed in 2008 and their music has garnered praise for its cutting wit, gnarled indie sound and a punk rock delivery. Their 2012 debut No Passion All Technique introduced their sound before they broke through in 2014 with their sophomore full-length Under Color of Official Right. This year the band return with their brand new album The Agent Intellect which comes out on 9 October via Hardly Art.

We asked the band to tell us their top 5 of anything and they chose… Well they chose something pretty different… “Life’s a Gas is our favourite type of song collectively as a band. It was almost impossible to narrow this list down to just 5. If anyone is looking to publish a list of “Top 50 Life’s a Gases” hit us up on Twitter.”

So, without further ado here are Protomartyr’s Top 5 Life’s A Gases

1

Watters Brothers - Life is a Gas

Number 1 no contest. In the immortal words of Saddam Hussein, “life is a gas.”

2

Matt Barker - Life's A Gas

The true number 1 if you’re a purist who thinks that having “is” in the title isn’t canon. Let’s kick off our Birkenstocks and rest our fedora over our eyes in the hammock because life’s a gas.

3

T-Rex - Life's a Gas

A distant third for this expired dad rock.

4

Ramones - Life's A Gas

Ok that slog is finally over and done with. Let’s bring the party back.

5

Six Time Losers - Life's A Gas

They might be called six time losers but this song is all #win
