Photographer Bai Joiner captures the young surfers of Lagos

Baingor Joiner is a photographer and general multi-hyphenate living and working out of Lagos, Nigeria. As part of the multidisciplinary WAFFLESNCREAM collective, he is part of a generation of creatives thriving in the city. His work first caught the attention of WAFFLESNCREAM a couple of years ago when they asked him to document the skating scene in the city.

In this new editorial, Joiner moves his lens to the shore to photograph a day in the life of the city’s surfers-in-training. Speaking about the images over email, Joiner told us, “The aim of this was to spotlight Tarkwa Bay, our Lagos paradise. It’s a place that we spend a lot of time at and a source of inspiration to us. We were hoping to share our little paradise with the world.”

Paradise is the word. On the beach, young surfers are mentored by an instructor called Godspower who provides equipment and training with the help of charity donations. Describing the atmosphere on the day, Joiner told us, “The sun is out in Lagos most times in the year… There’s never really a bad time to [shoot].” With “surfers chasing the waves, guys playing footie on the beach” – the images provide an authentic snapshot of a unique setting.
