Primavera Sound : Day Two Report

Back to the Parc for round two, and it was another remarkable day of music from all ends of the spectrum.

Early-ish, and Julian Casablancas + the Voidz were endearingly scatty on the huge Primavera stage, and even played a cover of a song by some other band or something. Kathleen Hanna sparkled with The Julie Ruin, her personality glinting through the band’s theatrical synth-punk mini-sagas. She put the world to rights, then departed with a cartwheel, the splits and a wave. Iconic.

Patti Smith, commanding as ever, rolled through the classics from Horses, her voice clearly not time-withered and band sounding huge, and reverence came spilling from all quarters of the dusty expanse that make up the festival’s two main stages.

Belle and Sebastian were as pleasant an act you could wish to watch from the grassy hill by the ATP stage, but in truth the it was Run The Jewels who won the day outright. There isn’t a more explosive act in music right now – it went off. And Killer Mike got his wife out onstage to get the crowd to wish her a happy birthday, which was nice.

Death From Above 1979 went bang-bang-bang, rattled through their two albums, and were absolutely fucking brilliant, as per usual. And it was over to the 360° experience of the Bowers & Wilkins Sound System, where the day ended with British techno’s increasingly confounding presence Objekt, whose measured excursions between techno, breaks and IDM provided a the perfect late night closer as the sun raised.
