Unsung Female Pioneers – Mixed by Cera Khin

Happy International Women’s Day.

Today, women march for gender equality, rallying behind the #MeToo movement to create a safer, and inclusive, environment for women. In the process, the movement aims to highlight disparities and continue a dialogue of the obstacles women face on a daily basis. We’re very proud, then, to be hosting this mix from NTS regular Cera Khin today of all days: a hour-long mix featuring a diverse all-women tracklist.

“This mix tracklist includes only female underrated (in my eyes) artists,” she says. “I guess this topic is very relative and maybe other people might disagree with my vision.”

A regular fixture on Bristol-based radio station Noods, Cera Khin is also a label head, having launched her imprint, LazyTapes, with the tape Guided Meditation, along with a collaboration with Young Echo member Ossia. Drawing from a library of wide-ranging influences, Khin expertly stitches together disparate genres – dub, Japanese, reggae, jazz, Egyptian and Ethiopian – into sonic collages that sound as though they’re traversing a subconscious state, balancing the heavy-lidded line between sleep and waking.

Her Crack mix opens with the shimmering textures of ambient pioneer Midori Takada, fluidly flowing into a piece by Paris-based composer Tomoko Sauvage. Later sewing Cosey Fanni Tutti’s reflections on work in the sex industry into the journey, here’s a mix of music and stories crafted by women artists, curated exclusively for Crack Magazine.
