This week’s Crack Mix comes from Dimitris Papadatos: the Athens-based artist better known as Jay Glass Dubs.

Papadatos arguably broke out via his Glacial Dancehall mixtape, which materialised in 2016 via Bristol-based experimental dub imprint Bokeh Versions. The project saw Papadatos slow, screw and abstract the base elements of dancehall 7″s from his personal collection, reassembling their constituent parts into a heady new whole.

The change-rearrange approach is typical of Jay Glass Dubs’ productions. In previous interviews, he’s put musique concrète on a par with traditional dub techniques in terms of its stylistic influence – and it’s one that permeates his impressively broad output.

More recently, Papadatos has returned to Bokeh with YMFEES, a collaborative EP which combines his foreboding production with the spoken-word ruminations of Leslie Winter to bewitching effect, as well as Safest Dub; a 12″ for Berceuse Heroique that treads the line between cosmic dub and lovers rock. He is also currently touring a live version of the JGD project which spans live re-dubbing of his original tracks and ambient modular synth excursions.

Unsurprisingly, this head-spinning array of influences and sounds makes for an interesting mix. For his Crack session, Papadatos starts with chilling, spacey ambience, before warming things up with tracks from the likes of O$VMV$M and Ben Vince. A unique mix from a singular producer.
