Music fans and cinema lovers continue to mourn the loss of Jóhann Jóhannsson, the Icelandic composer who passed away aged 48 earlier this month.

Through his film scores and solo work, Jóhannsson captured a certain icy, fragile tension – blending the worlds of classical composition and experimental electronics with an emotive sensibility. Records like IBM 1401, A User’s Manual are defining works in the electronic avant-garde while scores for films including Arrival and Sicario helped elevate those pictures from being good films to true greatness.

In tribute to the late composer, we invited Dave Howell of FatCat Records and 130701 to put together a special mix built from music composed by Jóhannsson. Dave Howell signed Jóhannsson in 2010, a decade after meeting him and first falling in love with his work. FatCat released The Miner’s Hymns, the score for Bill Morrison’s film on the Durham mining industry.

Piecing together interview and film snippets and weaving them through a tapestry of some of his most stirring and affecting work, the hour-long mix is a touching requiem for an artist and friend.
