There’s a thrilling new sound taking over parks, valleys and nightclubs in Tahiti, the main island of French Polynesia.
Entitled ori deck – or just deck – the electronic style is native to Tahiti, with roots in moombahton, reggaeton and dubstep. In our June issue scene piece investigating the rise of deck, writer Tiare Tuuhia explained that the movement can be characterised by its “downtempo drums, exaggerated portamentos, syncopated rhythms and simple, affecting melodies” – not forgetting the inclusion of traditional Polynesian hallmarks such as orero.
QuinzeQuinze are a multidisciplinary collective turned musical outfit based in Paris. Two of its members, Tsi-min and Ennio, hail from Tahiti and, as such, seek to infuse their work with the music and culture of their home turf. It’s something QuinzeQuinze do here, too, as they deliver a deck-focused mix under their DJing alias TA’A_INO.
“You could say that deck is a form of moombahton on Polynesian steroids, as in recent years it has evolved into a form endemic to the island,” they explain. “This mix is composed of several deck remixes and original creations from Tahitian DJs. We wanted to present deck in its actual form but also in its different variations like dug, tubz and kawash. These variations are usually linked to specific dance moves like ori deck.”
Read our June issue feature on ori deck, featuring QuinzeQuinze, DJ Bozy and more.
