Sunday Mix: M Field

Pop Sunday Ambient Classical

Prior to 2021, singer and guitarist Matthew Field was best known for his work as part of Cape Town-based indie-pop group Beatenberg. Since their formation, the trio – comprised of Field, Robin Brink and Ross Dorkin – have shared a smattering of mellow, mood-lifting releases such as 2014’s The Hanging Gardens of Beatenberg and 2018’s 12 Views of Beatenberg to critical acclaim.

This year however, Field struck out on his own to release his debut EP as M Field. With warm, lilting rhythms and bright melodies, the eponymous five-track project brought a slice of sunshine to the cool September days in which it was released. The record also featured production from Nathan Jenkins, aka Bullion – another artist who sources power in the understated, and finds invigorating ways to blur electronic motifs in with pop.

For today’s Sunday Mix, Field splices lush, sentimental tracks from the likes of Duval Timothy, Molly Drake and Nina Simone with film and video game music, plus classical compositions by Bach, Mozart and more. “It’s the first time I’ve done something like this,” Field tells Crack Magazine over email, “and I hope the result is enjoyable and/or interesting!”

There’s a surprise inclusion in there as well – well, surprising in comparison to the rest of the tracklist, but not when you consider Field’s magpie-like approach to music-making. However, we’ll leave you to discover that one for yourselves.
