Warm and groove-heavy house from one of Rotterdam’s rising stars.

Suze Ijó explores the inclusive nature of house music ahead of Amsterdam Pride week, which kicks off this weekend on 27 July. In her own words, “it’s a very hopeful mix, mostly by B/POC artists,” going on to describe how lyrics from Fingers Inc’s Never No More Lonely (“I needed someone to show me / I didn’t have to be all so lonely”) and the irresistible vibe of Frankie Knuckles’ Whistle Song express the same kind of hope and pride in being different that the celebrations do.

A former member of the First Floor crew, Ijó has over the past couple of years found herself increasingly in demand in Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam, and here is representing the Dance with Pride Collective. They themselves are involved in several events throughout the course of Pride week in the Dutch capital, including those with Discwoman, Eris Drew, Uchi, Dee Diggs and LazerGazer, the first of which is a fundraiser for We Reclaim Our Pride.

The organisation has, in the few years since its inception, been a constantly audible voice in drawing the club world’s attention back to its roots in queer culture. As Suze Ijó puts it: “I’m a lover of house music. House music wouldn’t be here without the B/POC/queer community.”
