RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY PRESENTS UK LECTURE SERIES

A couple of weeks ago Crack’s Editor-In-Chief had the pleasure of hosting a series of free lectures and parties courtesy of the good folks at Red Bull Music Academy. With events in Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester and Bristol, the RBMA series was a chance to get closer to some of the foremost artists in electronic music and get beneath the skin of the industry.

With lectures from the likes of Derrick May, Jackmaster, Optimo, Greg Wilson, Erol Alkan, T. Williams, Eats Everything, Artwork and Appleblim, the famous Red Bull sofa welcomed a wealth of experience and talent, with topics ranging from career retrospectives from more established artists, to tips to getting into The Academy from those who’d been through the selection process and been lucky enough to earn a place.

With the focus on the road to RBMA Tokyo 2014, the lectures gave the audience a chance to ask questions, find out more about the selection process, and what a day at the Academy might involve. With New York 2013 participant T. Williams on hand at all the lectures, it was a perfect opportunity to gain insight into what the RBMA has done for the careers of those involved.

Highlights included Derrick May in the Leeds lecture with his humour-fuelled anecdotes on the roots of techno as an art form and his early experiences in Detroit. In Bristol, Erol Alkan talked about the history of seminal London club night Trash and the uneasy transition from humble indie club spinner to DJ superstardom. In Manchester Greg Wilson’s plotted DJ history lesson was inspirational, talking about early club nights in Manchester and the need for a rewriting of the history books to incorporate the influence of more black music in the development of house music as we know it.

With more Red Bull Music Academy lectures planned for the future, this was a series of events Crack was proud to be involved with.

Applications to participate in the Red Bull Music Academy 2014 close on March 18th. You can apply here:  www.redbullmusicacademy.com/apply
