Selections: Bienoise

Welcome back to Selections, a series of exclusive artist-curated playlists from those in the know.

Alberto Ricca performs under a string of monikers, but his most consistent guise is as Bienoise. Recognised as an artist spearheading a contemporary movement of Italian creativity, Ricca is part of The Italian New Wave, a project platforming the cutting-edge sounds of Italy. Furthermore, Bienoise helms a label of his own, pushing LPs of mostly improvised material via his imprint Floating Forest Records.

As for his own productions, Bienoise’s sounds can be found via Concrete, Bitpusher and Yeveran Tapes. Having studied music composition for the cinema at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, there’s a distinct, cinematic influence to his sonics in the way that he mixes contemplative atmospheres with futuristic club sounds. As he gears up to release the mini-album Most Beautiful Design on the newly-relaunched label Mille Plateaux, the Italian producer comes through with an exclusive tracklist of cuts that’ve informed his own.

“In this selection, I mixed influences on, and developments of, the dense minimalism I explored in Most Beautiful Design,” he writes via email. “There are different shades of spectralism (Autechre, Tristan Murail), some tracks that I’m obsessed with (Do While, DOLPHINS, Hidden Place), please-never-stop loops, and some sheer information overload between free jazz, death metal and breakcore.”

Most Beautiful Design is out on 16 November via Mille Plateaux
