Selections: DJ Nobu

Welcome back to Selections, a series of exclusive artist-curated Spotify playlists from those in the know.

Poised at the forefront of Japan’s techno scene, DJ Nobu needs little introduction. As well as crafting his own productions, Nobu runs the Future Terror club nigh and steering the ship at his own imprint, Bitta. Hailing from Chiba, a city 40km south-east of Tokyo, the Japanese artist first tapped into the underbelly of Japan’s alternative scene through hardcore and punk in his hometown in the 90s. Beginning his musical trajectory with mixes of punk intertwined with hip-hop and dub, it was, as he’s previously revealed, upon witnessing Jeff Mills performing in Tokyo that he decided to switch up his sound with techno.

With a record collection numbering more than 10,000, we couldn’t resist in tapping DJ Nobu for a playlist. Running from new wave to techno, Mika Vainio’s brutalist minimalism to indie, this exclusive Selections is compellingly unpredictable – just how we like it.

DJ Nobu plays at Neopop Festival, Portugal, 8-11 August
