Selections: Freddy K

Welcome back to Selections, a series of exclusive artist-curated Spotify playlists from those in the know.

Freddy K can stake a claim to be one of the most influential figures in Italian techno. He spent many years in his native Italy first surrounding himself in the scene, before becoming a ubiquitous figure through a daily four-hour show on Virus Radio in Rome. He’s also released seminal records that’ve acted as musical touchstones for younger generations of producers in Rome; his track Rage of Age becoming a crossover hit upon its release.

Fast forward to the present and he’s spent a decade in Berlin as a selector at Mr Ties’ Homopatik parties, lifted the careers of the likes of Hector Oaks and Donato Dozzy, run KEY Vinyl for 10 years and continued to champion his own style of dancefloor weapons. As a DJ too, the respect he carries for his mammoth sets are up there with top-tier selectors.

“This is a selection of tracks that I can play in different moments late in the morning and afternoon… the so-called ‘after-hour,'” he tells us. “The vibe is different from the usual night party, it’s another state of mind. You feel [you’ve been] dancing [for] hours, but you can’t stop. You’re warm, sexier, everything becomes intriguing, less obvious. [It’s] a sort of spontaneous selection; who has and enjoys those feelings? Who wants to stay longer, well beyond the sunrise, hopefully forever?”

Freddy K plays Dekmantel Festival, Amsterdam, 31 July to 4 August
